Free Music Lessons open to the Miami Valley

Music Mentors provides free one-on-one applied music lessons for members of the Miami Valley community.  Lessons are held at Central State’s main campus in Wilberforce, Ohio in the Paul Robeson Center for Music and the Performing Arts every Saturday. Lesson times are at the discretion of each teacher. They will run according to the academic year, beginning on August 23rd, 2008.  Lessons are offered in piano, bass, guitar, voice, percussion, clarinet, and brass. Additional classes in music theory, percussion ensemble, and group piano are also available.

Music Mentor Chris Smith with voice student, William Harvey.  This is William’s 2nd year in Music Mentors.  He also takes private piano lessons, Chinese, and swimming.  William is a student at Horace Mann Elementary in Dayton, Ohio.

Music Mentor Joseph Glenn with percussion student, Ben Wingate.  This is Ben’s first session with Music Mentors.  He is home-schooled in the Xenia area.

There are two sections of Music Theory – one for participants ages 5 – 10, the other for participants ages 11 – adult.  Both sections have proven to augment the knowledge imparted in one-on-one music lessons.  Students become musically literate at a quicker pace as well as ground themselves in theory fundamentals integral to success in performance.  The class is taught by Chris Smith, a junior at Central State University.

Music Mentor Rachael Garrett with piano student, Debbie Kuhn.  Debbie is one of several adult students.  Her daughter Mackenzie started with us last year.  Both mother and daughter study with Rachael.  Music Mentors has become a place where both young beginners come to begin their training and adults come to refresh their skills.  All students are encouraged to perform at the recital at the end of each session.  Every single adult without fail has joined their young peers in performing works they’ve studied throughout the course of the session.  Debbie will be performing the 1st movement of the Moonlight Sonata by Ludwig van Beethoven in the coming recital, December 6th.
